Applying for Residentia

If you are planning on living in Calpe, Spain for more than 3 months of the year then you are required by Law to apply for a residence certificate if you are a EU Citizen. This has to be done in person at the National Police Station in Benidorm. You will need to take with you certain documentation and a signed EX18 application form, which you can download here. (in Spanish)

Supporting documents to be taken with you

You will need to take the completed application form with supporting documents with you depending on your circumstances.
in all cases you will need a vaild:

1. Passport
2. NIE Number
3. Rental agreement, or Mortgage statement

Once you have completed the aplication Form you will need to take this to your Bank and pay the fee, the form will then be stamped by the bank.

Evidence of financial means and healthcare

There have been a few changes in the law recently with regards to EU citizens moving to Spain to take advantage of the countries excellent health care without having the financial means to support them self’s in the country.

To apply for residential you will now be required to produce evidence of you private healthcare and certificate. One company we use here in Spain is DKV but there are many more. More information. There is also a local english rep that will meet you to discuss your requirments.

You will also need to prove your income and status over the last 3 months

Retired – You will need to prove your pension payments going into a Spanish bank account, bank statements are not suitable you will need a certificate statement form your bank.

Self employed- You will need to prove your income over 3 months going into your Spanish bank account, Bank statements are not suitable evidence for this you will need a certificate from the bank. Your income will need to be sufficient to support your self and any other person who is dependent on you in your family who is not yet working in Spain.
(If you want to start up your own business here in Spain you will need your resident certificate first before you proceed with any other applications.This includes opening a business account)

Employed workers must produce a declaration to the effect that they have been hired by the employer or a certificate of employment. These documents must include, as a minimum, details of the name and address of the company, tax identification and Employer’s Social Security Number. Presentation of an employment contract registered with the corresponding Public Employment Service.

People who do not work in Spain- You will need to prove your income over 3 months going into your Spanish bank account, Bank statements are not suitable evidence for this you will need a certificate from the bank. Proof of the possession of sufficient resources, whether from regular income, including work income or income of another kind, or from ownership of assets, such as property deeds, documentation proving that income from capital is received. Your income will need to be sufficient to support your self and any other person who is dependent on you in your family who is not yet working in Spain.

The certificate will be issued immediately, once compliance with the corresponding requirements has been confirmed. This certificate will give the name, nationality and address of the registered person, his foreign national identity number and the date of registration.
